Environmental Business International Recognizes Firms for Growth and Innovation
(February 1, 2018 – Asheville, N.C.): Environmental Business International Inc. and Climate Change Business Journal has selected StatWeather, Inc. as a recipient of the international Business Achievement Award for Technology.
A social enterprise founded in 2009 by mathematician Ria Persad and software engineer Mark Carlo, StatWeather pioneered a purely data-driven, statistical approach to weather and climate modeling that is used globally within the energy, commodities, climate risk, and public health sectors. The company was recognized with this award for:
- Developing its long-range models of weather and climate patterns using state-of-the-art proprietary artificial intelligence to solve some of the world’s toughest problems in climate risk modeling and assessment.
- Expanding into Asia with disaster risk reduction services for the public benefit.
- Establishing a new vertical in public health to project outbreaks of allergies and asthma, dengue, malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
- Donating half of its intellectual property devoted to predicting the risks of catastrophic events globally to the StatWeather Institute, a humanitarian organization based at The Collider, a consortium of climate companies in “Climate City” Asheville, North Carolina.
“We are truly honored to receive this global merit for our technology in risk modeling and assessment,” said StatWeather Founder and CEO Ria Persad. “Climate and disaster risk is perhaps the number one issue facing the world today, with ramifications in public health, food supply, migration, wildlife, energy, the global economy, and many other areas. We are grateful to Environment Business International for their validation of the need for businesses such as StatWeather to provide solutions to the global climate crisis facing the world today.”
In late 2017, Climate Change Business Journal solicited industry, government, non-profits and the broader climate change community for nominations for the 2017 CCBJ Business Achievement Awards, from which a committee of Journal staff and editorial advisory board members selected the winners.
This is not the first time StatWeather has been recognized for excellence. The company was previously named Global Data Provider of the Year by Energy Risk. Platts ranked founder Ria Persad among the top seven global Lifetime Achievement leaders and named StatWeather a finalist in its Global Energy Awards. Persad also won the Power-Gen and Renewable Energy Woman of the Year award.
StatWeather’s accuracy in long-range forecasting has been covered by publications ranging from Forbes to The Wall Street Journal as a quantum leap in the field of predicting climate patterns such as extreme heat, drought, and hydrology as far ahead as two years in some cases.
