Join UNCA Divest at The Collider for a special screening of a documentary that chronicles the launch of the fossil-fuel divestment campaign
ASHEVILLE, N.C., Feb. 18, 2019 — On February 26, The Collider will host the University of North Carolina, Asheville, (UNCA) Divest Coalition for a screening of the documentary “Divest! The Global Climate Movement on Tour” as part of its monthly movie night series. Directed by Josh Fox and Steve Liptay, the documentary chronicles 350.org’s “Do the Math” bus tour across the U.S. in 2012 as it launched the fossil fuel divestment campaign onto the national and ultimately international stage.
“Each month, The Collider works to partner with a local organization to screen a movie related to climate and the environment,” said Megan Robinson, Chief Operating Officer of The Collider. “This February we are excited to partner with the student-led group, UNCA Divest, to highlight the important work they are doing within our community.”
This event is free and open to the public — no tickets or RSVP necessary. The doors of The Collider will open at 6:30 p.m. and the film will begin at 7:00 p.m. A presentation and Q&A session with UNCA Divest will follow the screening. The Collider will also provide light refreshments and beer from our sponsor, Hi-Wire Brewing.
“Divest! The Global Climate Movement on Tour” documents the growth of a campaign targeting the fossil fuel industry in an effort to withdraw its social license to operate. Each night Bill McKibben and special guests lay out the findings in his landmark Rolling Stone article “Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math” and make both the moral and historical case for divestment. Follow their journey, see what victories they achieve, and find out if those victories are adding up to real, timely change.
Established in 2015, UNCA Divest is a student organization dedicated to pushing the university to remove its investments in fossil fuel companies. They believe that divestment is the first step that the institution can take toward addressing climate change.
