(July 16, 2018 – Asheville, N.C.): Part open house, part pitch session, Discovery Day on August 8th is an opportunity to learn exactly how companies at The Collider are using data to address one of humanity’s greatest challenges – climate change. The Collider’s inaugural Discovery Day features climate data scientists and entrepreneurs, and the innovative products they are developing right here in Asheville, home to the world’s largest collection of weather and climate data.
“The public usually comes to The Collider for movie nights, science pubs, and book talks to hear what is being done to address climate change around the world. Discovery Day is designed for the public to learn more specifically about the world-class work being done by Collider members,” says Josh Dorfman, CEO of The Collider.
Doors open at 4:30PM and the program begins at 5PM. Featured members include:
- Acclimatise, a specialist advisory and analytics company providing world-class expertise in climate change adaptation and risk management. Acclimatise is a UK-based firm, with its North American headquarters located at The Collider.
- Climate Interactive, a nonprofit that creates interactive, scientifically rigorous tools that help people see connections, play out scenarios, and see what works to address our world’s biggest challenges.
- FernLeaf Interactive and UNC Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center, a public-private partnership that deliver resilience solutions. The collaborative provides two pathways to two separate entities’ collective capabilities and skill sets—through NEMAC, a university applied research center, or through FernLeaf Interactive, a private corporation.
- The Climate Service, a startup that uses climate science and technology to help companies measure, monitor, and manage financial impacts of climate on their business.
The event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 per person or $20 per family. Due to limited space, registration via Eventbrite is encouraged. Beer will be provided by Hi-Wire Brewing, and other light refreshments will be available.
